The circus has a very long history, going back to the Ancient Rome. Since the first circus ever recorded, named “Circus Maximus”, the circus enchanted generation after generation with extraordinary performances.

At first the circus was an exhibition of horses with chariot races, equestrian shows, staged battles, jugglers and acrobats. Nowadays the circus is much more than that and it’s more like an art. Currently the most famous and representative circus around the world is Cirque du Soleil.

Founded in 1984, Cirque du Soleil, managed in twenty five years of experience to create unique shows that fascinated the audience all over the world. Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier founded the Cirque du Soleil entertainment company located in Montreal, Canada with the  to create a unique show that would mix circus art and street entertainment.

Cirque du Soleil had financial problems in its first years of existence, but became profitable from 1990 when Franco Dragone joined as director. In 1990s and 2000s, Cirque du Soleil made 19 shows in 271 different cities all around the world becoming the number one entertainment company in the industry.

Each show involves about 4,000 people from 40 different countries. Everything involved in the shows, starting with costumes and make-up, music and scenery are unique and especially created for each show the company created.

Since 1990 when the show “Nouvelle Expérience” revolutionized the circus industry, Cirque du Soleil attracted millions of spectators from all over the world. Cirque du Soleil presented its shows on every continent, in more than 270 cities. Cirque du Soleil produced 19 shows, and its most famous is “Saltimbanco”. Created in 1992, the “Saltimbanco” show still runs today but as an arena show since 2007.

Besides the extraordinary circus shows, Cirque du Soleil company was also involved in other projects like special events, fitness programs and art galleries.
