Benefits and disadvantages of soy milk

In the recent years the soy milk consumption increased, soy becoming more and more popular, but also becoming a largely debated subject. Scientist made lots of studies about how soy milk affects the health, but the research still continues because we know so little.

Like all other products, soy milk has benefits and disadvantages. The major benefit of soy milk consumption includes cholesterol reducing, this way lowering the risk of developing heart-related issues. Soy milk is also lactose free, making it the best choice for those suffering from lactose intolerance.

Another advantage is that the soy milk does not contain protein called casein that can be found in the cow milk. Casein is widely used in different products (medicine, foods, paints or adhesives) and people can easily develop an allergy to it or have gastrointestinal disorders.

As a disadvantage, soy milk phytic acid that can lower the absorption of certain minerals and vitamins. Soy also contains high levels of phytoestrogen that has negative effects on the production of sperm and on the amount of testosterone in men’s body. Some scientists also suggest that the isoflavones found in soy can contribute to the development of breast cancer, thyroid disorders and even leukemia. Others consider that soy consumption helps preventing certain types of cancer, including prostate and breast.

We don’t know all about the soy milk, so we cannot conclude if drinking it regularly will bring us more benefits or more disadvantages. It probably depends on each and every person’s situation.
