Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital was the first European settlement in the New World. Christopher Columbus reached the island back in 1492, when it was inhibited by Taino tribes. ¬†After almost three hundred years on Spanish, French and Haitian periods of domination the Dominican Republic won its independence for a short period of time in 1821. The ancestor of the modern cruise ships is Prinzessin Victoria Luise, designed by Albert Ballin, completed in 1900. The vessel was used to cross the Atlantic, the journey never taking less than four days. In time, the race for more passengers forced ocean liners to add many luxuries and to increase the comfort. Titanic was famous at the time of its completion for fine dining and well-appointed staterooms. After 1970s the interest for vacation cruises started to grow, and with it the cruise ship statures.
