Aspen, the most famous ski destination

We all know about celebrities that go to Aspen for ski or just to spend their vacation. In fact Aspen is so famous due to the famous people that came here for winter sports. Eventually lots of them ended up like part time residents in Aspen.

The city was born in 1879 when a small community of miners established there. At first it was named Ute City, but one year later was renamed Aspen because of the aspen trees that cover the mountains. Back in 1881 and 1882, Aspen was the most productive silver-mining district in United States. The mining activity declined and by 1930 in Aspen remained only 750 residences.

Due to the excellent snow that covered the mountains every winter some investors planned to transform Aspen into a ski resort, but the World War II stopped the project. In 1946 the Aspen Skiing Corporation was finally founded, Aspen making his first step towards the high class ski resort that is today.

The area started to develop and three more ski areas emerged: Buttermilk (1958), Aspen Highlands (1958) and Snowmass (1969). Slowly the city became famous as the playground for wealthy celebrities. Some of the famous Aspen’s part time residences are Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, Victoria and David Beckham, Dean Cain, Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner, Goldie Hawn, Catherine Zeta Jones, Martina Navratilova, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson.
